Some of my friends who work for medium to large-sized companies. Over time, and through hanging out, I've really grown appreciate the dynamics of some of their workplaces - especially those in inherently creative fields. There is a built-in social infrastructure - not only do people work together daily, they also hang out with each other after hours and collaborate on artistic endeavors.
There is a larger feedback system in place for work/ideas and a real community that inspires unity and teamwork. My friends are motivated because they are working with intelligent, creative, and diverse people. At least that is how it appears to me.
When I tell my friends that I admire their work situation, they sometimes look at me as if I were crazy. They tell me the independence I have established, the automation, and the freedom of time and space are all luxuries that they ultimately hope to have themselves - as if this was American Dream 2.0. I don't know...There is a downside to working mostly by oneself and/or in small groups mostly - it can be isolative, requires intense self-discipline and self-motivation. There are not as developed social infrastructures, feedback mechanisms and sense of belonging to a larger community/culture. Double-edged swords. That said, art, music and good parties all make up for the social infrastructure I lack by working for myself and largely by myself.
